History
Agata, whose name will show who is good and noble spirit, was born in Catania around 230 AD, when the proconsul Quinziano. Quinziano dropped to 250 in Catania for the effectiveness of the edict of the Emperor Decius, who required the renunciation of the Christian faith. Il coraggio di Agata è espressione di fierezza e orgoglio per una Catania che spesso ha dovuto fare i conti con il coraggio di guardarsi allo specchio durante la sua lunga storia.
Le reliquie ritornarono in Città dopo molto tempo, il 17 agosto 1126.
Le reliquiesono conservate all'interno del busto d'argento che gira in processione per la Città: crannio, torace e organi interni. Arti e mammelle sono all'interno di uno scrigno d'argento.
I Miracoli
Possiamo affermare che la devozione alla santuzza è cresciuta nel tempo per via dei numerosi miracoli che gli sono stati attribuiti.
Il primo di questi è a dir poco stupefacente: nel 252 Catania venne distrutta nelle sue periferie da una temibile colata lavica, e i cittadini, per fermarla, presero dalla cattedrale il velo a lei appartenuto (quel velo che indossava durante il processo, caratteristico delle diaconesse dell'epoca) e lo posero contro la lava. L'eruzione cominciò il 1 febbraio e si arrestò il 5 febbraio! Così vuole la leggenda...
